Best TSA Approved Luggage Locks – Keep Your Luggage Safe

Best TSA Approved Luggage Locks – Keep Your Luggage Safe

If you’re traveling to or within the USA or Canada you’ll need to use a special Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved lock, which can be opened by authorities without breaking the lock, as well as re-locked. We have found the best TSA approved luggage locks for you to choose from and will tell you why you should definitely lock your luggage.

There are also many more ways to keep your luggage safe.

Locking your luggage is something you should do in any case, as it just makes it harder for people to get to your belongings and that might be all you need to do to deter an opportunistic thief. It also helps prevent your luggage opening and content spilling out.

While you are able to keep an eye on your carry on luggage, you have to trust the people that will get in touch with your checked luggage. Most of them I’d presume to be honest people, but just on the off chance, you’ll want to make sure your luggage and content are secure.

Of course the authorities will reserve the right to open luggage and check contents if scanning them shows something they need to have a closer look at. You won’t be getting a notification of your luggage being opened. The only way to tell will be to get a lock which will show you once it’s been tampered with.

Most TSA locks these days do exactly those things. Authorities can open and lock them again and the lock will show when it’s been opened. This will help ease your mind, knowing whether someone looked through your items or not.

Here are the most popular locks and the reasons they are so popular:

1 – Forge TSA Approved Luggage Locks

  • TSA recognised look – This alloy body lock comes in a TSA recognised and accepted look, which means TSA inspectors know not to cut the lock.
  • Open alert indicator – It comes with a red indicator which will pop up to show it’s been opened. This is a mechanical indicator and does not require batteries
  • Most durable lock – the manufacturer gives an unconditional lifetime guarantee for their locks. If anyone can find a way to break these locks open, they are happy to fully refund or replace them!
  • Designed with alloy body, hardened steel shackles and specially designed, patented internal mechanisms make these lock the toughest luggage locks.
  • Will not rust, oxidise or freeze up
  • Lock needs to be re-locked again by TSA agent to retrieve their key – most other luggage locks don’t need to be re-locked
  • 3 digit combination lock – quick and easy programming – follow instruction which are included
  • High contrast details for easy to read digits
  • Blue 4 Pack is featured above, but also comes in many different options
  • Available in different colours, also in multi colours, as well as locks plus cables to secure items to another item or immovable objects
  • More than 1500 items sold with great reviews
  • Many uses apart from your luggage, such as briefcases or the gym locker

This is by far one of the best locks and the many satisfied customers prove this too. The only flaw is that TSA agents might not know to re-lock the lock again, but most, I assume, would be able to figure this out.

2 – TravelMore TSA Approved Luggage Lock

  • Combination cable lock
  • TSA approved and recognised look – 100% travel sentry certified
  • TSA receive codes and tools to securely open and close the locks without breaking them
  • Durable, strong and reliable – high strength zinc alloy lock bodies and shackles made from hardened steel, internal mechanisms are patented – hand tested before leaving factory
  • Small and weatherproof – Size: 4″ x 2.8″ x 0.6″. Cable length: 3.7 inches. Weight: 2.6 ounces.
  • 100% lifetime warranty by manufacturer – no questions asked, replacement or money back – you will be assisted within one day
  • 3 Dial combination lock and flexible steel cable – lock can easily be set and reset to any combination of your choosing – the steel cable is flexible and will easily thread through any type of luggage zipper – no keys to lose
  • Many uses – for your suitcase, backpack, gym or other lockers, etc – use on anything with zippers
  • Lock comes with instructions and instructional video
  • Available in 1, 2, 4 and 6 pack in black or orange

One possible drawback that a customer made us aware of: You just have to hold the release button and keep moving the numbers until open. You will notice movement of the release button when you get the correct numbers. BUT, with more than 1000 combinations this would take a long time to figure out the correct code.

More than 90% of more than 2000 customers are very satisfied with their purchase

3 – Talonport Keyless TSA Approved Luggage Lock

  • Keyless Luggage lock with four key cards (2 credit card sized key cards and 2 smaller key cards which will fit on any keyring)

  • Lifetime guarantee – Never cut and replacement cards – Should you ever have your locks cut by the TSA or in case you lose your four card keys, you will get a free replacement.
  • Durable design – all metal construction, indestructible, last a lifetime
  • Small slim lock
  • Can’t be picked – no combination to remember – key cards for keyring and/or to fit in card slot in wallet
  • Open easily – place the key card in the lock and have it open instantly
  • Many uses – luggage, briefcase, lockers, etc

4 – Lewis N Clark Triple Security Lock TSA Approved

  • TSA approved and recognised lock for your luggage – use for travel, business etc
  • Triple Security lock – three options to lock your luggage – use one at a time or combine
  • 1 – Lock zip pulls together
  • 2 – Lock luggage handles to zip pulls
  • 3 – Lock your luggage to fixed objects
  • Combination lock (3 dial) with two steel cables – no need for keys and no lost keys ever
  • Attachable from top and bottom
  • Attach and lock another bag or item to your suitcase
  • TSA can open lock easily without causing damage to your luggage or locks
  • Durable design – Cast zinc alloy – sturdy construction with ABS plastic housing – Steel cables braided

Can you lock your luggage? 5 Reasons You Should Lock Your Luggage

Now let’s sum up why you should always lock your luggage. I know there are plenty of people who say, what’s the point? The point is, or the points are, as follows:

    1. Deter a thief – An opportunist will most likely go for luggage that’s easiest to open i.e. one that doesn’t have a lock or isn’t wrapped (yep that’s a thing, you can get your luggage wrapped at airports these days) because he will need more time and I suppose skill to break the lock and therefore will risk getting caught.

    2. Keep your suitcase closed – Using a lock will help protect your content from spilling out due to broken zips or broken luggage cases – of course a suitcase belt will help with this even more – see the luggage belt with included TSA lock mentioned above

    3. Travel insurance – If you go for travel insurance you are basically obligated to do your part in keeping your luggage safest. Should you want to claim for lost or stolen items, they will likely ask you whether you locked your luggage and your claim might be considered void if you haven’t locked your suitcase.

    4. Keep things safe(r) when staying in a hotel room without a safe – Should you be staying in a hotel or hostel without having the option to lock your valuables in a safe, keeping them inside your locked suitcase might help to prevent theft.

    5. Peace of mind – I don’t know about you, but I feel safer if I know my suitcase or other luggage is locked. It is inexpensive and easily done and there are quite a few options now to feel and be a bit safer when it comes to protecting your valuables.

Some of the options to protect your luggage I have already mentioned above, but there are also other ones available, such as buying a hard case suitcase to prevent having your suitcase sliced open or the zips broken into.

There are also suitcases available with integrated TSA locks.

And then there is of course the wrapping of the luggage, which I briefly mentioned before. I’m not too sure what to make of it, as it might either deter a thief or encourage the person to go for the wrapped luggage, as it might have more valuables in it than the others.

One of the best tips is though to inform yourself before your trip whether there are places during your travel which are known to be theft hotspots and prepare accordingly. For example, if you see that most people at a specific airport are having their luggage wrapped, maybe follow suit.

But always, in my opinion, use a luggage lock. I have always done so and will continue doing so.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Let me know your thoughts and comments below and I’ll get back to you soon.

    Happy travels!
